Car Insurance Guide

Fully Comprehensive

You can choose to have a Fully Comprehensive policy which covers everything that a Third Party Fire and Theft policy would plus; accidental damage to your own vehicle, loss or damage to personal effects in the vehicle up to a stated limit and replacement of damaged/broken windscreens. Some Comprehensive policies have extras such as 'personal accident' benefits or a 'medical expenses' policy added. Make sure you read your policy details so you know exactly what you are covered for.

Third Party fire and Theft

This level of cover does not provide you with any benefits for your vehicle in the event of an accident or incident. If you are happy to pay for any damages to your own vehicle then this maybe a viable option for you as this will be less expensive. One third of motorists choose Third Party Fire and Theft. This is a good level of cover that provides the same liability cover as the Third Party only version plus it has the added feature of covering your vehicle for fire and theft incidents. However, if you are selling your vehicle make sure you have received the agreed amount before parting with it, because your policy will not cover your loss if your vehicle is taken from you by deception.

Other Drivers & Driving Others Vehicles

When you come to insure your vehicle you must tell your insurer who you want to drive the vehicle. They will be particularly interested in their age, experience, driving record and occupation. Today most policies will cover the policyholder in person to drive other vehicles. Usually your cover will be limited to Third Party Only even if you have a Comprehensive policy. You must have the car owner's permission first before you drive the vehicle.

No Claims Bonus

This is a discount offered to you for driving claim free during the period of insurance. This is a personal discount and goes with you even if you change insurers after the full year's insurance is over. No Claims Bonus scales vary from each insurer, but on a general note you could expect 30% for 1 claim free year up to 60 - 65% after 5 years. If you have more than 4 years No Claims Bonus you are also offered the opportunity to protect this by paying an extra fee. This means that you could have up to two claims in a three - five years period and not have your No Claims Bonus affected.

Policy Documents

Motor Insurers will issue you with the following pieces of information: The certificate of Insurance. The Road Traffic Act stipulates that every driver must hold a certificate of insurance. You will also need this document to buy your Vehicle licence (Road Tax Disc). A Cover Note. This is usually the first document given to you. It acts as a temporary policy and certificate until your new insurance policy has been set up and the actual certificate has been sent to you. The Policy Document. This is the document that tells you everything you are covered for. It also sets out the Terms and Conditions of the policy. It is essential you read your policy documents carefully, these days there is no small print or insurance jargon to wade through. If there is anything you do not understand then you must get in touch with your Insurer.
